Solar Homesteading Solar Homesteading is the act of building a new home with the intent of becoming Off Grid completely or at least partially from Power Companies by using Solar Power. With the cost of Energy sky-rocketing everyday it really makes sense for the Average American. Even if you are planning on remodeling an existing home , There are many ways you can Go Green and save long term Energy costs for yourself. Most high quality Deep Cycle Battery Banks will last a minimum of 4 to 7 years. Purchasing Solar panels currently costs between 4 and 7 dollars per watt depending on quality and quantity of panels you purchase. The average U.S. household used 10,654 kWh a year in 2001, or 888 kWh/mo. http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/reps/enduse/er01_us.html The U.S. as a whole used 3,883 billion kWh in 2003, or 13,868 kwH per person based on a population of 280 million. http://www.eia.doe.gov/neic/brochure/electricity/electricity.html How many solar panels do I need to produce enough electricity to run my house? You'll have to figure out Exactly how much Power you use daily - There is No simple answer. Do your Research !!!! Many power companies now will more or less rent you the complete Solar package if you own your home already and the costs offset themselves pretty well. Many States will give you credit for using Alternative energy as well - Some may even pay for the entire system with credits. http://www.dsireusa.org/ is a GREAT resource for Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy ... It is worth visiting to see if your state actually encourages Going Green when it comes to Energy. http://www.eere.energy.gov/afdc/incentives_laws.html is another good site for state and federal laws and incentives related to alternative fuels and vehicles.
